Compare accountants in Bromsgrove & the West Midlands

Choosing an accountant is hard to research, because almost every firm’s website says the same things. So we compared ourselves against nine local and national firms on the facts that are actually checkable — and said plainly when they’re the better choice.

Quick answer

How do I choose an accountant in Bromsgrove and the West Midlands?

Start with what you actually need. If you need a statutory audit, corporate finance or FCA-regulated financial advice, you need a larger firm such as Ormerod Rutter, Bishop Fleming, Ballards or Jerroms. If you are an owner-managed business needing accounts, corporation tax, VAT, payroll, Self Assessment and tax planning, a small independent practice is usually cheaper and more responsive. Then check three things about any firm: who will actually do your work, what qualifications they hold, and whether the fee is fixed in advance.

What to look for

Six things worth checking before you appoint anyone

Useful whoever you end up choosing — including if that isn’t us.

1

Who actually does your work

At a large firm your day-to-day contact is often a junior member of staff with a review chain above them. At a small firm it is usually the owner. Neither is automatically better, but you should know which you are buying — ask to meet the person who will prepare your accounts, not just the partner who sells the engagement.

2

Qualifications, and whether they're published

"Accountant" is not a protected title in the UK — anyone can use it. ICAEW (chartered), ACCA (chartered certified), AAT and ATT are the credentials that mean something. A firm that publishes its people's qualifications is telling you something; so is one that doesn't. Check the relevant register before you appoint.

3

Whether you need audit

Most small companies don't. You generally need one only if you exceed the audit thresholds, are part of a group, or your articles or funders require it. If you do need audit, only a registered auditor can do it — and that rules out a lot of small practices, including us.

4

How the fee works

Fixed monthly fees make budgeting simple and mean you can ask a question without worrying about the clock. Time-based billing can work out cheaper if your affairs are simple and you rarely make contact. What matters is knowing which one you're on before you sign.

5

Software, and who owns the data

If you're on Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent or Sage, check the firm works in it natively rather than exporting into their own system. Making Tax Digital extends to sole traders and landlords over £50,000 from April 2026, so digital records are no longer optional for most people.

6

Response times

The single most common reason people switch accountants isn't price — it's not being able to get hold of anyone. Ask what the normal turnaround on an email is, and ask an existing client if you can.

Grouped by the kind of firm they are, because a two-person practice and a UK top-30 firm aren’t really competing for the same client.

FAQs

Questions about comparing accountants

Are these comparisons impartial?

They are written by us, so read them with that in mind. What we can promise is that every factual claim is sourced from Companies House or the firm's own website and linked so you can check it, and that each page states plainly when the other firm is the better choice. Where we don't offer something — audit being the main one — we say so rather than steering around it.

Do you have to be an ICAEW or ACCA firm to be a good accountant?

No, but it is a meaningful signal. "Accountant" is not a protected term in the UK, so professional-body membership is one of the few checkable indicators of training and oversight. At MPS, Matt Scrivens is a Fellow of the ACCA (FCCA) and Mitch Pearson is an AAT member and ATT-qualified Taxation Technician.

How much does an accountant cost in Bromsgrove?

Most local firms quote on your size, structure and services rather than a list price, so headline comparisons are unreliable. We work to a fixed monthly fee agreed up front after a free discovery call, covering ad-hoc questions during the year rather than billing them separately.

How do I switch accountants?

It is more straightforward than most people expect and you don't have to wait for your year end. Once you appoint a new firm they write to your existing accountant for professional clearance and your records, and arrange the HMRC authorisations. We handle the whole process, and it usually takes a couple of weeks with no gap in your filings.

Is a bigger accountancy firm better?

It is better at some things. Larger firms carry audit registration, corporate finance teams, sector specialists and cover when someone is on holiday. They also cost more, and a small client at a large firm can find themselves low in the queue. For a typical owner-managed company doing accounts, tax, VAT and payroll, size buys process rather than a better outcome.

What if a fact on one of these pages is wrong?

Tell us and we will fix it. Every page lists its sources and the date we last checked them. Firms change their services, staff and pricing, and we would rather correct a page than leave something inaccurate on it.
